INTRODUCTION

Ce document fournit une traduction côte à côte du français vers l'anglais d'un article intitulé «Récits Initiatiques - LÉGENDE» trouvé dans La Revue EON série 2 revue 15-16 juillet-août 1924 et revue 17-18 septembre-octobre 1924.

INTRODUCTION

This document provides a side-by-side French to English translation of an article called “Récits Initiatiques - LÉGENDE” found in La Revue EON series 2 revue 15-16 July-August 1924 and revue 17-18 September-Octobre 1924.

L'histoire se déroule en Grèce aux alentours de 1900 et décrit la découverte et la récupération de 8 parchemins dans un monastère près de Levadia, dans la région de Boetia. Pour se rendre au monastère depuis Athènes, le narrateur est passé par le Pirée et le canal de Corinthe, jusqu'à un port situé sur la rive nord du golfe de Conrinth. Ce port était probablement Antikira {320 12 GRÈCE}, à quelque 33 km de Levadia. Cela donne une marche d'environ 7 heures pour arriver à Levadia. En raison des contraintes de temps, il est très probable que cette partie du voyage ait été effectuée en calèche, en charabanc ou autre. Cependant, aucune mention n'est faite à ce sujet.

The story is set in Greece around the year around 1900 and describes the discovery and recovery of 8 parchments from a monastery near Levadia in the region of Boetia. To get to the monastery from Athens, the storyteller went via Piraeus and the Corinth canal, on to a port on the north side of the gulf of Conrinth. This port was most likely Antikira {320 12 GREECE} some 33 km from Levadia. This gives a walk of some 7 hours to get to Levadia. Due to time constraints, it is most likely that this part of the journey was achieved with a horse carriage, charabanc or similar. However, no mention regarding this matter.

Une fois arrivé à Levadia, le narrateur engagea alors un guide pour lui emmener la dernière partie de la randonnée jusqu'au monastère du prophète Élie. C'est à ce stade que l'histoire devient quelque peu intéressante sur le plan ésotérique, ainsi que la description de la récupération des parchemins.

Once at Levadia, the narrator then hired a guide to take him the lasr part of the trek up to the monastery of the prophet Elias. It is at this point the story becomes esoterically somewhat interesting, and the description of the recovery of the parachments.

1 Unis par le même idéal et mus par l'ardent désir de participer à sa réalisation, nous étions groupés autour de Notre Bien-Aimé Maître, écoutant avec déférence les enseignements dictés par sa haute sagesse; son Verbe bienfaisant avait dissipé de nombreuses erreurs au cours de cette soirée, et tout en méditant sur les paroles de Vérité que nous venions d'entendre, je vins à penser: Comment Notre Maître a-t-il pu acquérir foute cette science! Accaparé par cette pensée, je fus très surpris d'entendre Notre Maître nous dire ceci:

1 United by the same ideal and moved by the ardent desire to participate in its realisation, we were grouped around Our Beloved Master, listening with deference to the teachings dictated by his high wisdom. His beneficent Word had dispelled many errors during that evening, and while meditating on the words of Truth that we had just heard, I asked myself: How did Our Master acquire this science!' Captivated by this thought, I was very surprised to hear Our Master tell us this:

2 “You were wondering how I could have acquired all this knowledge?”

3 «Assurément, il m'a fallu travailler, mais ma tâche a été rendue plus facile par certains documents qui m'ont donné la connaissance de la plus grande partie des lois agissant dans la Création. Mon bagage scientifique reposant sur de telles bases, il m'est facile de vous expliquer tous les phénomènes que vous avez pu observer.»

3 “For sure, I had to work hard, but my task was made easier by certain documents that gave me knowledge of the greater part of the laws operating in Creation. My scientific background rests on such a foundation, so it is easy for me to explain to you about all the phenomena you have been able to observe.”

4 Ces paroles auraient suscité une pluie de question si Notre Maître ne nous eût dit aussitôt: «Je ne puis vous communiquer ces documents, cependant je puis vous narrer dans quelles circonstances je suis entré en leur possession.»

4 These words would have provoked a shower of questions if Our Master had not immediatelysaid to us: “I cannot give you these documents, but I can tell you under what circumstances I came into their possession.”

5 «À l'époque où cet événement se passa, je venais d'atteindre ma dix-neuvième année; en ce temps-là, je me destinais à la médecine et je résidais à Athènes pour y continuer mes études. Une assez longue maladie dont j'étais remis depuis peu de temps, avait complètement déséquilibré mon maigre budget; aussi tout en suivant mes cours à la Faculté de médecine, pour assurer ma subsistance, je m'occupais de la comptabilité d'une pharmacie voisine de l’École.

5 «At the time of this event, I had just reached my nineteenth year. At that time, I was destined for medicine and was living in Athens to continue my studies there. A fairly long illness, from which I had only recently recovered, had completely unbalanced my meagre budget, so while attending classes at the Faculty of Medicine, to ensure my livelihood, I was employed to take care of the accounts of a pharmacy that was next to the medical school.

6 Depuis le commencement de ma maladie jusqu'à mes débuts de comptable, je fus continuellement victime de l'adversité. Ce fut la rencontre de mon premier Maître qui marqua la fin de ces épreuves et le commencement d'une vie nouvelle pour moi.

6 From the onset of my illness until I started as an accountant, I was constantly a victim of adversity. It was the meeting with my first Master that marked the end of these trials and the beginning of a new life for me.

7 J'avançai rapidement dans la voie de l'Initiation; depuis près d'un mois j'avais quitté mon Maître, parfois il m'arrivait de songer aux diverses aventures dont j'avais été le héros et je pressentais de nouveaux événements; ces pensées ne me causaient aucune joie, car à ce moment je désirais simplement continuer mes études dans le domaine profane. Mon désir ne fut point exaucé et mes pressentiments se réalisèrent.

7 I advanced rapidly on the path of Initiation. For nearly a month I had been away from my Master, and I sometimes thought of the various adventures which I had been the hero of, and I had a sense of new events to come. These thoughts did not give me joy, because at that moment I simply wanted to continue my studies in the secular field[1]. My wish was not granted, and my forebodings came true.

8 Une nuit je fus réveillé par la sensation d'une présence insolite dans ma chambre; vaguement inquiet, je me préparais à vérifier cette impression lorsque, dans le silence, une voix à l'accent impératif s'éleva. Malgré la peur qui m'avait envahi, j'entendis très distinctement ces paroles: «Va au monastère du prophète Elle, à Levadia, tu y recevras des ordres...» La voix s'était tue depuis longtemps quand, ayant recouvré mon sang-froid, j'allumais une lampe afin de vérifier si je n'avais pas été victime d'un mystificateur. Je ne vis rien d'anormal; mais trop troublé pour pouvoir dormir, je commençais mes préparatifs de départ et j'adressais une lettre à la pharmacie pour annoncer une absence de trois jours environ, étant moi-même ignorant de la durée de mon voyage et des résultats bons ou mauvais qu'il pourrait avoir.

8 One night I was awakened by the sensation of an unusual presence in my room. Being slightly worried, I was preparing to verify this impression when, in the silence, I heard an assertive voice an speak out. Despite the fear that had overtaken me, I heard very clearly these words: "Go to the monastery of the prophet Elias[2] in Levadia. There, you will receive orders...". The voice had long since fallen silent when, having regained my composure, I lit a lamp to check to see if I had been a victim of a prankster. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary but was too disturbed to sleep. So, I began preparations for my departure and wrote a letter to the pharmacy announcing a three-day absence, being unaware of the length of time my trip would take and whether it would have good or bad results.

9 Le jour venait de poindre lorsque je quittais mon domicile pour me rendre à la gare. Avant de sortir de chez moi, j'avais fait l'inventaire de ma fortune; l'opération avait été longue, ayant retourné toutes mes poches, mais le résultat fut rapidement dénombré: j'avais en monnaie grecque 120 drachmes. En chemin, je tentais de calculer les frais que ce voyage me causerait, mais je ne puis y parvenir et bientôt j'arrivais à la gare. Je me précipitais au bureau des Renseignements et je demandais le prix du billet pour Levadia; il me sembla que la terre s'ouvrait sous moi lorsque, j'entendis la réponse: la somme exigée dépassait mon avoir de dix drachmes. Profondément déçu, je sortis du bureau, errant un moment dans le hall; je cherchais par quels moyens je pourrais exécuter l'ordre que j'avais reçu. Fouillant machinalement dans mes poches, je sentis ma carte d'étudiant; celte fois, je crus que l'obstacle était renversé. Joyeux, je bondis au guichet, montrant ma carte, je demandais un billet demi-tarif pour Levadia. Nouvelle déception ! Je n'avais pas le droit à une réduction pour une distance aussi longue. Je pestais contre la bizarrerie des règlements, puis je m'assis sur un banc pour méditer à mon aise sur ma situation. Le temps pressait; après avoir réfléchi un instant, je me décidais à aller voir un ami qui habitait Le Pirée, pour lui emprunter la somme qui m'était nécessaire. Je me mis en route pour Le Pirée et, tout en marchant, je revivais la, scène de la nuit. Sous l'influence de la nervosité due à l'insomnie et aux empêchements pécuniaires qui me tracassaient, mes pensées prenaient un ton morose; je me demandais à nouveau si je n'étais pas victime d'une mystification; j'étais tenté de prendre ces empêchements pour des avis de ne pas obéir à cette voix.

9 At dawn I left home to go to the railway station. Before leaving, I made an inventory of my finances and having turned out my pockets, I quick discovered that I had 120 drachmas in Greek currency. On the way to the station, I tried to calculate the expenses need for my journey but was unable to do so. I soon arrived at the station. I rushed to the Information Office and asked for the price of the ticket to Levadia. It seemed to me that the ground opened up underneath me when I heard the reply. The sum demanded exceeded my assets by ten drachmas. Being profoundly disappointed I left the office and wandered round the hall for a while, looking for a way to carry out the order that I had received. Mechanically, I searched through my pockets and chanced upon my student card. This time I thought I had overcome the obstacle and joyful, I rushed back into the ticket office and presenting my student card I asked for a half price ticket to Levadi. Another disappointment! As I was not entitled to a discount for such a long distance. I railed against the bizarre nature of the regulations and sat down on a bench to ponder upon my situation. Time was running out. After a moment’s reflection, I decided to go and see a friend who lived in Piraeus, to borrow the money I needed. I set off for Piraeus and while walking I relived the scene of the previous night. As I was under the influence of nervousness due to insomnia as well as the worry about my finances, my thoughts became morose. I wondered once again if I was not the victim of a prank. I was tempted to take these impediments as advice not to obey the voice.

10 Absorbé par ces réflexions, je passais à côté du port sans m'en apercevoir; le hurlement d'une sirène me fit reconnaître le lieu, où j'étais, et les cris d'un matelot attirèrent mon attention. Au même instant, je me rappelais que Levadia était située pas très loin d'un port desservi régulièrement; réconforté par cette pensée, je tendis l'oreille. Le bateau dont le matelot annonçait le départ était sur le point de partir, et, pour comble de bonheur, à la destination que je désirais. Immédiatement mes réflexions pessimistes cessèrent; sans plus tarder, je m'approchais du matelot et je lui demandais le prix de la traversée. Le résultat de mes démarches fut favorable; une demi-heure plus tard je voguais vers de nouveaux destins.

10 Absorbed by these reflections, I passed by the port without noticing it. Only the howl of a siren made me recognize where I was. Then the cry of a sailor caught my attention and I recalled that Levadia was not far from a port which was regularly serviced from Piraeus and comforted by this thought I listened attentively. The sailor was announcing the departure of a boat and to top it all, to the destination I desired. Immediately my pessimistic thoughts stopped. Without delay, I approached the sailor and asked him the price of the crossing. The result of my efforts was favourable and half an hour later I was sailing towards new destinies.

11 Confortablement installé dans un coin du pont, bien abrité, je regardais d'un œil indifférent le splendide panorama qui s'offrait à ma vue en pensant, à la mission qui m'avait été donnée, et cela fut pour moi l'occasion d'une douce rêverie.

11 Comfortably installed in a sheltered corner of the deck, I gazed at the splendid panorama which was present to my eye while I mulled over the mission which had been given. For me this was an opportunity for a gentle daydream.

12 La traversée, favorisée par un temps superbe, dura environ quatre heures; vers trois heures de l'après-midi, nous arrivions au port. Je me mêlais au petit groupe des passagers qui débarquaient et je me dirigeais vers Levadia sans perdre un instant; sachant qu'il n'existait aucun moyen de communication pour aller au monastère, je décidais de prendre un guide et un mulet. Dans l'unique hôtellerie du village je me procurais ce qui m'était nécessaire et, accompagné de mon guide, nous partîmes, emportant des vivres pour trois jours; le muletier revenait au village le soir même et devait revenir me chercher le troisième jour dans la matinée. La somme qu'il me demanda fit une brèche sérieuse dans mon avoir. Après avoir payé les provisions dont je m'étais muni, il me restait juste ce qu'il fallait pour le retour; mais peu' importe, je voulais arriver au monastère et savoir ce que l'on attendait de moi.

12 Favoured by superb weather, the crossing took approximately four hours and by three o'clock in the afternoon, we arrived at the port[3]. I mingled with the small group of passengers who were disembarking and immediately set out for Levadia[4]. Not knowing how to get to the monastery, I decided to take a guide and a mule. In the only hostelry in the village[5], I hire a guide and accompanied by him we left with food for three days. The mule driver was to return to the village that evening and to come back to pick me up on the morning of the third day. The sum he asked for made a serious dent in my finance that I had with me, and after paying for provisions, I had just enough left for the return journey. But no matter, I wanted to get to the monastery and know what was expected of me.

13 Ainsi toutes les difficultés qui avaient surgi poux m'empêcher d'accomplir ma mission s'étaient trouvées aplanies. Plein d'allégresse, je suivais mon guide d'un pas léger en grimpant le sentier tortueux qui mène au monastère.

13 Thus, all my difficulties to prevent me from accomplishing my mission had been overcome. Full of joy, I followed my guide with a light step climbing the tortuous path leading to the monastery.

14 Nous arrivâmes au but de notre course à la fin de la journée; mon guide ne voulut pas s'arrêter un instant; il déchargea son mulet et me quitta aussitôt. Le monastère, flanqué d'une maisonnette servant d'asile au gardien, se dressait sur un plateau; il n'avait rien de remarquable ni par ses dimensions, ni par son architecture: c'était un monument dont la vétusté attestait un nombre respectable de siècles. Peu habitué à ces randonnées, je commençais à être las, mais la majesté du spectacle qui s'offrait à mes regards me fit tout oublier; le plateau dominait toutes les crêtes environnantes, au loin, par une trouée entre deux montagnes, j'apercevais la mer dont les vagues scintillaient sous les reflets d'or du soleil couchant; peu à peu, le bruit des sabots du mulet frappant le rocher s'éteignit; ravi par le calme et la paix de cette solitude, je m'absorbais dans une profonde contemplation...

14 At the end of the day, we reached our goal. As my guide didn't want to wait, he immediately unloaded the mule and left immediately. The monastery stood on a plateau and was flanked by a small cottage that was used as a shelter for the caretaker. There was nothing remarkable about the size or architecture of the monastery. It was a monument whose dilapidation attested to a respectable number of centuries. Not used to such hikes, I was quite weary, but the majesty of the spectacle was before my eyes made me forget everything. All the surrounding ridgs were dominated by the plateau and in the distance, through a gap between two mountains, I could see the sea whose waves shimmered under the golden reflections of the setting sun. Little by little, the sound of the mule's hooves hitting rock faded away. I was enchanted by the calm and peace of this solitude and was absorbed in deep contemplation...

15 Noble seigneur, que la paix de Dieu soit avec toi.

16 Ces paroles, prononcées derrière moi, me rappelèrent le but de ma présence en ce lieu. Me retournant, je vis un moine à l'aspect vénérable. Je compris que c'était le gardien et le seul occupant du monastère; je m'excusais de ne pas m'être présenté à lui dès mon arrivée; il me répondit d'une voix empreinte de bonté et de respect: «Les grands esprits sont souvent absents de la terre».

15 “Noble lord may the peace of God be with you.”

16 These words came from behind me, reminded me of why I was there. Turning around, I saw a monk with a venerable appearance. I understood that he was the caretaker and the only occupant of the monastery. I apologised for not having introduced myself to him when I arrived, he answered me in a voice full of kindness and respect: "Great spirits are often absent from the earth".

17 Très étonné par cette réponse, je crus à une méprise; je voulais lui expliquer le but de ma visite lorsqu'il reprit: «Mon seigneur, je t'attendais». En Grèce, on emploie volontiers ces expressions cérémonieuses, mais je ne m'attendais guère à les trouver dans le langage d'un anachorète. Il s'excusa de me quitter pour aller me chercher un siège et revint portant un antique fauteuil qui, probablement, était réservé aux évêques ou aux dignitaires de passage. Il me l'offrit avec les marques d'un profond respect; intrigué, je déclinais son offre en ces termes: «Mon Père, ma qualité de chrétien m'interdit de m'asseoir dans ce fauteuil, alors que vous, un serviteur de Christ, vous êtes debout; votre grand âge me l'interdit également...» «Mon seigneur, prends place dans ce fauteuil, je m'assoirai sur le sol, moi; je rie puis être que ton serviteur...» Ne comprenant rien à cette réponse louangeuse, je résolus de m'expliquer sur le motif de ma présence: «Mon Père, votre insistance me remplit de confusion; je ne suis qu'un pauvre étudiant en médecine, venu ici pour accomplir un pieux pèlerinage. Ce n'est sûrement pas à ma personnalité que doivent s'adresser de telle paroles.» Ayant décliné ma qualité, je pensais savoir enfin dans quel but j'avais été envoyé là; je ne fus pas satisfait; le moine me répondit simplement: «Noble voyageur, depuis longtemps je sais que tu dois venir; je sais aussi qui tu es; repose-toi dans ce fauteuil; pour venir ici, le chemin est rude, tu dois être fatigué.»

17 Being very surprised by his answer, I thought there was a misunderstanding. I wanted to explain the purpose of my visit when he said: "My Lord, I was waiting for you". In Greec`e, these ceremonial expressions are commonly used, but I did not expect an anchorite to use them. He excused himself in order to fetch me a seat and he returned with an antique armchair which was probably reserved for visiting bishops or dignitaries. He offered it to me with a mark of profound respect. Intrigued, I declined his offer with the following words: "Father, as a Christian, I am forbidden to sit in this chair, while you, a servant of Christ, are standing. Your great age also forbids me to do so…” “My lord, sit in this chair and I will sit on the floor. I laugh as I can only be your servant...” Failing to understand this praiseworthy response, I decided to explain the reason for my presence: “My Father, your insistence fills me with confusion. I am but a poor medical student, who came here to accomplish a pious pilgrimage. It is surely not to a personality as me that such words be addressed.” Having thus reduced my status, I finally thought I knew why I had been sent there. I was not pleased. The monk replied simply: "Noble traveller, I have known for a long time that you must come. Also, I know who you are. Rest in this chair. To come here, the road is hard so you must be tired.”

18 Renonçant à comprendre ce langage mystérieux, je demandais la permission d'aller dans la chapelle rendre grâce à Dieu de mon heureux voyage; le moine s'y opposa.: «Après le coucher du soleil», me dit-il, et il- se tut sur ces paroles.

18 Unable to understand this mysterious language, I asked permission to go to the chapel to give thanks to God for my happy journey. The monk objected. "After sunset," he said to me. He then fell silent.

19 Le soleil déclinais rapidement à l'horizon; dans le lointain, ses derniers feus rougissaient les flots; bientôt il disparut. Le crépuscule naissant couvrit d'une ombre légère les crêtes voisines; jetant un regard autour de moi, je m'aperçus que le moine avait disparu. Il revint avec une écuelle à moitié remplie d'une maigre pitance composée de riz et de fèves. Voyant son dénuement, je lui proposais de partager mes provisions avec lui; il refusa; j'insistais en vain, et au moment où je voulus installer mon repas, il me dit:

19 The sun was rapidly setting on the horizon and its last light made the waves red[6], but the sun soon it disappeared. The coming twilight cast a slight shadow over the neighbouring ridges. Glancing around, I noticed that the monk had disappeared. He returned with a bowl half-filled with a meagre pittance of rice and beans. Seeing his destitution, I offered to share my provisions with him. He refused. I insisted in vain, but when I began to prepare my meal, he said to me:

20 «Mon seigneur, je t'ai dit que je sais qui tu es; depuis longtemps j'attendais un jeune voyageur; il devait arriver un vingt-neuf août, avant le coucher du soleil. Le voyageur que j'attends depuis des années, c'est toi. Voici ce que tu dois faire: Quand la nuit sera, complètement venue, je t'introduirai dans la chapelle; tu y resteras seul jusqu'à l'aube et peut-être sauras-tu pourquoi tu es venu ici; pour l'instant, laisse ces aliments, afin que ton corps soit purifiée par le jeûne...»

20 "My lord, I told you that I know who you are. I have been waiting for a young traveller for a long time. He was supposed to arrive on the 29^th of August before sunset[7]. The traveller I have been waiting for years is you. This is what you must do: When night is fully dark, I will take you into the chapel where you will stay alone until dawn. Perhaps you will know why you have come here. For now, leave this food, so that your body will be purified by fasting...”

21 Les choses prenaient une tournure qui était loin de m'enchanter; la perspective, de passer la nuit dans la chapelle me laissait froid; je n'eus pas longtemps à méditer sur ce sujet car la nuit était venue. Le moine me fit signe de le suivre et nous pénétrâmes dans la chapelle, faiblement éclairée par une veilleuse. A voix basse il me donna quelques renseignements sur la disposition des lieux et me montra, dans un coin obscur, l'entrée d'un escalier qui descend dans la crypte, puis il s'agenouilla pour la prière du soir. Je l'imitais. Quelques minutes après, il se leva et me quitta, faisant un geste de bénédiction.

21 Things were taking a turn that was far from enchanting. The prospect of spending the night in the chapel left me rather cold. I didn't have long to consider the matter as night had arrived. The monk beckoned me to follow him, and we entered the chapel which was dimly lit by a nightlight. In a low voice he gave me some information about the layout of the chapel and showed me in a dark corner, the entrance to a staircase that led down to the crypt. He then knelt down for evening prayer. I did likewise. A few minutes later he got up and left, making a gesture of blessing.

22 Le gémissement de la porte vermoulue et le grincement de la clef rouillée dans la serrure me firent tressaillir; je me demandais pourquoi cette incarcération? Pour ne pas être obsédé, je fis le tour de la chapelle en saluant, selon le rite, toutes les icônes qui en garnissent les murs. Après avoir terminé cette salutation et ne me sentant pas encore en état de me plonger dans une méditation sérieuse, je voulus visiter la crypte.

22 The creaking of the worm-eaten door and the grating of the rusty key in the lock made me start. I wondered why the need to be incarcerated. In order not to become obsessed, I went around the chapel saluting, according to the rite, all the icons that adorned the walls. After saluting, and not yet feeling able to immerse myself in serious meditation, I chose to visit the crypt.

23 J'hésitais un instant devant l'escalier obscur; maîtrisant cette faiblesse, je descendis à tâtons les marches branlantes. À mesure que j'avançais, une odeur indéfinissable venait frapper mes narines; enfin j'arrivais au bas de l'escalier et j'aperçus un faible point lumineux vers lequel je me dirigeais. J'avais fait une dizaine de pas lorsque, butant du pied, je fis halte et je me baissais pour reconnaître, par le toucher, quel genre d'obstacle j'avais devant moi. Je pensais être devant l'escalier d'un autel, mais mon bras erra dans le vide. Je m'étais arrêté juste devant un bassin dont je voyais miroiter l'eau sous la pâle clarté de la veilleuse suspendue à quelques pas de là la bordure dépassant le sol m'avait évité la chute. Cette salle devait servir de baptistère à une époque où les nouveaux adeptes du christianisme fréquentaient cette région; pour éviter un autre accident, je fermais les yeux un instant pour m'habituer à la faible lumière qui régnait dans la crypte.

23 I hesitated for a moment in front of the dark staircase. Mastering this weakness, I groped my way down the rickety steps. As I advanced, an indefinable smell hit my nostrils. I finally reached the bottom of the stair and saw a weak point of light towards which I was heading. I had taken about ten steps when, stumbling with my foot, I stopped and stooped down to feel what obstacle was before me. I thought I was in front of the steps of an altar, but my arm wandered around in a void. In fact, I had stopped in front of a pool whose water I could see shimmering under the pale light of a night light hanging a few steps away. The edge of the pool protruded above the ground and had prevented me from falling in. This room must have served as a baptistery at a time when new followers of Christianity frequented this region. To avoid another accident, I closed my eyes for a moment to get used to the faint light in the crypt.

24 Mes yeux, non habitués à l'obscurité, ne me permirent pas de reconnaître immédiatement quel genre d'icônes décoraient le baptistère, et maintenant j'apercevais dans l'ombre des formes humaines dont je distinguais les visages convulsés; leurs bouches tordues par un rictus affreux semblaient jeter l'anathème sur le téméraire qui avait osé troubler leur retraite et tous, le bras levé, faisaient un geste de menace à mon adresse. Je voulus fuir, mais, vaincu par la peur, je m'écroulais, évanoui.

24 Unaccustomed to the darkness, my eyes prevented me from immediately recognizing what kind of icons decorated the baptistery, and then I saw in the shadows, I could distinguish human forms with distorted faces. Their mouths were twisted into a hideous grimace seemed to be cursing the reckless person who had dared to disturb their retreat, with all of them with raised arms, making a threatening gesture at me. I wanted to flee but overcome by fear I collapsed in a faint.

25 La vision d'horreur qui m'avait jeté pantelant sur le sol se transformait peu à peu; les visages semblaient s'adoucir dans la lumière diffuse qui envahissait la crypte; pleinement conscient, je pus les compter: ils étaient douze. Aux vêtements sacerdotaux qui les recouvraient, je reconnus des évêques; ils étaient assis sur une espèce de trône et leurs bras, étendus, soutenaient la crosse épiscopale.

25 The vision of horror that had cast me to the floor gasping with terror, was gradually transformed. The faces seemed to soften in the diffuse light that pervaded the crypt. Fully conscious, I was able to count them – there were 12 of them. From the priestly vestments covering them I recognised the bishops. They were seated on a type of throne and their arms outstretched supporting the episcopal crosier.

26 Ce qui m'avait tant térrifié n'était que des cadavres embaumés, ensevelis suivant un rite ancien. Une veilleuse placée dans une petite niche creusée dans la muraille s'alluma spontanément au-dessus de chaque évêque, ainsi que les cierges d'un lustre suspendu devant le petit autel qui occupait le fond de la crypte; ces lumières faisaient scintiller l'or et les pierreries qui incrustaient la crosse et la mitre de chacun d'eux. Ce n'étaient plus des corps inanimés qui étaient sur les trônes: un souffle mystérieux soulevait les poitrines, les yeux brillaient pleins de vie et les visages rayonnaient entourés d'une auréole semblable à celle des saints.

26 What had so terrified me were the embalmed corpses, buried according to an ancient rite. Night-lights placed in a small niche dug into the wall above each bishop, spontaneously lit. Likewise, the candles in a chandelier suspended in front of the small altar that occupied the back of the also lit up. This light made the gold and gemstones inlaid on the crosier and mitre sparkle. They were no longer inanimate bodies on the thrones. A mysterious breath lifted their chests, their eyes shone with life and their faces radiated, surrounded by a halo similar to that of the saints.

27 Un des évêques se leva, entra dans le sanctuaire pour officier; un chœur invisible faisait les réponses. Le Saint Sacrifice terminé, il reprit sa place en bénissant l'assistance.

27 One of the bishops stood up and entered the sanctuary to officiate. An invisible choir made the responses. When the Divine Liturgy[8] was complete, he resumed his place blessing the congregation.

28 La voix d'un prédicateur placé près de moi se leva et, après avoir lu la parabole du semeur, il dit: «Mes frères, tout comme le laboureur sème le grain dans le sillon, Dieu envoie aussi sur la terre des êtres prédestinés afin qu'ils répandent, la lumière parmi les humains; celui qui est ici est un élu envoyé par la miséricorde divine.»

28 The voice of a preacher standing beside me rose and after reading the parable of the sower, he said: "My brethren, just as the ploughman sows’ grain in a furrow, God sends to earth predestined beings to spread light among humans. The one who is here, is a chosen one sent by divine mercy.”

30 Durant l'office, la fumée de l'encens avait, envahi la crypte, la vision devenait, moins nette, puis les cierges et les veilleuses s'éteignirent.

32 Tremblant, je me penchais sur la bassin et, plongeant mes mains dans l'eau, j'explorais le fond recouvert par une boue visqueuse et collante qui dégageait une odeur nauséabonde sous l'action de mes recherches.

32 Trembling, I leant over the pool, I plunged my hands into the water to explore the bottom that was covered by a viscous sticky mud that gave off a foul smell as a result of my search.

33 Je sentis un corps dur, je l'amenais sur le bord: c'était une pierre; continuant à fouiller, je ramenais successivement deux autres pierres; je cherchais encore, mais il n'y avait plus rien et, navré de ma découverte, je remontais dans la chapelle emportant ces trois pierres, puisque, c'était les seules choses que j'avais trouvées. Le cœur rempli d'amertume, je m'agenouillais et j'essayais de prier pour apaiser la douleur qui torturait mon être… Quelle cruauté de m'avoir fait venir ici et passer une nuit aussi mouvementée pour me faire prendre trois pierres dans un bassin rempli de boue. A cette pensée, mes larmes coulèrent et, je sanglotais comme un enfant. Mes tourments n'étaient pas encore terminés, à tout instant je sentais des souffles froids sur mon visage et des bruits de pas feutrés, ainsi que des murmures, se faisaient entendre derrière moi. Excédé, je me levais, emportant les objets de mon malheur et me blottis dans une encoignure près de la porte. Brisé par toutes ces émotions, affaibli par le jeûne et ma volonté défaillante ne réagisant plus, je m'endormis.

33 I felt a hard object which I brought up to the edge of the pool. It was a stone. Continuing my search, and successively I found two other stones. I tried ince again, but there was nothing alse. Hearbroken at my discovery, I went back up to the chapel carring the three stones as these were the only things I had found. With a heart filled with bitterness, I knelt down and tried to pray to soothe the pain that tortured my being… How cruel to have brought me here and spend an eventful night only to have three stones taken by me from a pool full of mud. At this thought, my tears flowed, and I sobbed like a child. My torment was not yet over. I continuously felt cold breath on my face and heard the sound of muffled footsteps and murmurs behind me. Exasperated, I got up, taking the objects of my misfortune with me, to huddled in a corner near the door. Broken by all these emotions, weakened by fasting, and my will failing to react, I fell asleep.

34 Une vive lumière frappant mes paupières me réveilla; le moine se tenait à côté de moi, me regardant, avec vénération. Par la porte ouverte je vis briller le soleil levant; je sortis aussitôt, heureux d'avoir recouvré la liberté, emportant mes trois pierres; un espoir m'était venu: elles étaient peut-être couvertes d'inscriptions. Hélas ! il n'y avait rien; aussi, pour oublier mes déconvenues, je répondis au moine qui m'assaillait de questions qu'avant fout je voulais dormir. Avisant un coin herbeux à souhait, je m'allongeais et m'endormis jusqu'au soir.....

34 A bright light striking my eyelids woke me up. The monk stood beside me looking at me with reverence. Through the open door I saw the rising sun shining. Immediately I went outside taking my three stones with me, happy to have regained freedom. A sudden hope came to me, perhaps they were covered with inscriptions. No such luck! there was nothing. To forget my disappointment I answered the monk, who assailed me with questions, that I needed to sleep. Noticing a grassy spot, I lay down and fell asleep until the evening.....

35 Mon compagnon était dans la joie en me regardant. Il me raconta, que trois ans auparavant une vision lui avait montré le voyageur attendu, endormi, derrière la porte de la chapelle; il me reconnaissait très bien; en me trouvant dans cette position, il avait cru devenir fou de joie. Puis, exaltant, il me fit des éloges dithyrambiques auxquels je ne compris rien; moi, je songeais tristement en regardant mes trois pierres.

35 My companion was looking at me joyfully. He told me that three years earlier, a vision had shown him the awaited traveller asleep behind the chapel door. He recognised me easily and finding me there, he thought he was going crazy with joy. In exhalutation, he gave me a glowing eulogy which I did not understand at all. Meanwhile I sadly pondered my three stones.

36 Elle me parut longue, la journée qui suivit; aussi, quelle fut ma joie quand j'entendis au matin du troisième jour le tintement de la clochette que le mulet portait attachée à son cou. Je pris congé du bon moine et je partis accompagné de sa bénédiction. Le retour fut moins joyeux que l'aller, mais j'étais tout de même content de rentrer à Athènes.

36 The day that followed dragged on, on the morning of the third day I was very happy when I heard the tinkling of the bell that the mule was wearing around his neck. I took lmy eave from the good monk and left with his blessing. The return journey was less joyful than the outward journey, but I was still happy to be returning back to Athens.

37 Arrivé à Levadia, je payais mon guide et je repris le chemin du port. Une voix m'appela, je ne voulus pas me retourner; quelqu'un arrivait derrière moi encourant; je ralentis le pas: c'était le muletier qui m'apportait deux colis trouvés dans le bât de son mulet. Je les pris sans comprendre; au toucher, j'eus vite fait de reconnaître leur contenu.

37 On arriving in Levadia, I paid the guide and started out to the port. Suddenly behind me, a voice called to me, but I did not turn around. As the person ran up, I slowed my pace. It was the mule drive who was carrying the two parcels which he had found in the pack saddle of his mule. I took them without realising. I quickly recognised their contents on touching them.

38 Maîtrisant mon envie de lui jeter les colis à la figure, je le remerciais par un léger pourboire et je continuais mon chemin chargé de mes trois pierres; dans l'après-midi, le bateau m'emmena, je rentrais dans mes pénates, heureux de reprendre mes occupations habituelles.

38 Mastering my desire to throw the parcels in his face, I thanked him with a small payment, and I continued on my way loaded down with my three stones. That afternoon, the boat took me back home, and was happy to resume my usual activites.

39 Je racontais cette histoire à quelques personnes qui en profitèrent pour se moquer de moi; seul un de mes amis, qui était, spirite, prit mon récit en considération et me donna l'assurance que c'était une épreuve qui serait certainement suivie d'une récompense.

39 I told this story to a few people who took the opportunity to make fun of me. Only one of my friends, who was a spiritualist, took my story into seriously and gave me the assurance that it was a test that would certainly be followed by a reward.

40 Les choses en seraient restées la si, un soir, en rentrant dans ma chambre, je n'avais pas fait tomber, par suite d'une maladresse, les trois pierres que j'avais posées sur une petite table; elles roulèrent avec fracas. Pour ne pas attirer l'attention die mes voisins, je me couchais sans faire de lumière. Le lendemain matin, je n'y pensais plus; mais en m'habillant, mon attention fut attirée par une des pierres qui paraissait brisée; je la pris, elle était réellement brisée, mais, chose bizarre, malgré la cassure qui était très nette, les deux morceaux tenaient encore; une légère traction les sépara; un tube de plomb était encastré dans une cavité ménagée à l'intérieur. J'examinais attentivement les deux autres qui étaient intactes; je n'aperçus rien qui pût prouver qu'elles avaient été travaillées; je les cassai et je trouvai un tube dans chacune d'elles.

40 Things would have remained as they were but for one evening on returning to my room. Through clumsiness, I knocked off the three stones that I had placed on a small table. They rolled away with a crash. Not to attract the attention of my neighbours, I went to bed without light[9]. Next morning, I thought no more about it, but as I got dressed, my attention was drawn to one of the stones that looked broken. I took it, it was really broken, but strangly despite the clear break, the two pieces still held together. A slight pull separated them and embedded inside a cavity was a lead pipe. I carefully examined the other two pieces which were intact and saw nothing that could prove that they had been worked on. On breaking them, I found a pipe in each.

41 J'avais posé les trois tubes sur la table et je les regardais plein d'émotion; allais-je enfin savoir pourquoi j'avais été envoyé au monastère du prophète Elie ? Le cœur battant, j'ouvris un tube: je retirais deux parchemins, quelques petits objets, des reliques étaient avec; j'examinais les parchemins: ils étaient très bien conservés, les enluminures superbes, enfin de véritables œuvres d'art.

41 I put the three pipes on the table and looked at them emotionally. Would I now know why I had been sent to the monastery of the prophet Elias? With a beating heart, I opened one tube and removed two parchments and a few small objects, relics that were with them. I examined the parchments. They were well preserved. The illuminations superb, finally real works of art.

42 La seule chose qui m'inquiéta, c'est que le texte était écrit en un langage conventionnel tiré die 'l'alphabet grec. J'ouvris le second tube: il y avait trois parchemins dont le texte était écrit de la même façon. Suprême espoir, j'ouvris le troisième: il contenait aussi trois parchemins, mais la clef n'y était pas. J'étais désespéré; j'étais là avec ces huit parchemins qui contenaient peut-être des révélations extraordinaires sans pouvoir les déchiffrer.

42 The only thing that worried me was that the text was written in a conventional notation[10] derived from the Greek alphabet. I opened the second tube. There were three scrolls with text written in the same manner. With supreme hope I opened the third tube, which also contained three scrolls, but there was no key. I was desperate. Here I was with eight scrolls which contained extraordinary revelations without being able to decipher them.

43 J'ai passé bien des nuits à travailler sur ces parchemins sans pouvoir trouver la clef; mais un jour, une inspiration soudaine me fil traduire le nom de Jean dans un mot du texte cryptographique; deux signes identiques et un nombre égal me prouvèrent la concordance. C'est en, me servant de cette clef que je parvins à traduire les huit parchemins; depuis ce jour, ma voie a été tracée et toutes mes activités ont été mises en action; pour réaliser l’œuvre que vous connaissez.»

43 I spent many nights working on these scrolls without being able to find the key, but one day, a sudden inspiration came to me, and I translated the name ‘Jean’ from a word in the cryptographic text. With two identical smybols and an equal number of letters, proved it to be consistent to me[11]. Using this key, I managed to translate the eight scrolls. Since that day, my path has been marked out and all my activities have been put into action to carry out the work that you know.»

44 Notre Vénéré Maître, fatigué par ce long récit, se tut; il était tard, et nous prîmes congé de lui. Tout eu parcourant la campagne endormie, mes pensées m'emmenaient bien loin dans un petit monastère grec où, trois pierres, qui contenaient la quintessence des connaissances humaines, avaient dormi des milliers d'années.

44 Our Venerable Master tired by this long story, fell silent. it was late and we took our leave. While wandering through the sleepy countryside, my thoughts took me far away to a small Greek monastery where three stones containing the quintessence of human knowledge had lain dormant for thousands of years.
